Detention of Ex-Prosecutor in Ayotzinapa Case

In the context of the investigation into the disappearance of 43 students from the Rural Normal School of Ayotzinapa in Iguala, Guerrero, in September 2014, Jesús Murillo Karam, former Attorney General of the Republic in Mexico, faces accusations of torture and enforced disappearance. Specifically, he is accused of being involved in alleged tortures inflicted on Felipe Rodríguez Salgado, known as 'El Cepillo', a member of the criminal group Guerreros Unidos responsible for the students' disappearance.

Despite more than a year having passed since his capture, Murillo Karam is still awaiting a trial that will determine his responsibility in one of the most notable human rights cases in recent Mexican history. Recently, a federal court rejected the request for provisional release presented by Murillo Karam, who has been under house arrest since April 2023.

The First Collegiate Court in Criminal Matters of Mexico City denied the amparo, arguing that the Attorney General's Office had convincingly demonstrated the risk of flight of the former official, based on the seriousness of the crimes he is charged with and the political, social, and legal impact of the Ayotzinapa case. Judge Francisco Javier Sarabia Ascencio pointed out that Murillo Karam, due to his experience and resources as the former head of the then Attorney General's Office, had the capacity to evade justice.

The detention of Jesús Murillo Karam took place on August 19, 2022, when he was arrested by the Navy Secretariat near his residence in Lomas de Chapultepec, Mexico City.
